Anti-corruption orange code, under EU protection

de Claudiu Saftoiu    |    01 Aug 2008   •   00:00

The extraordinary parliamentary session called at the request of the President for the 13th of august, and repeating the vote in the case of the investigated MPs on the 17th of September offers an opportunity to the anti-Basescu members to go dipper into the manger prepared by Cotroceni. For the delight of the electorate. The ability of the President makes it possible again for the juicy and perfect-for-the-media issue to be transformed into electoral capital with an efficiency to be shown later, during the possible uninominal elections in the autumn.

The stake of the anti-corruption fight remains the headline of the parliamentary elections. The report on Justice of the European Commission, as well as the recent unprecedented intervention of two senior officials from Brussels in favour of maintaining the leadership of DNA, represents enough signals to understand what Europe wants from Romania. There are two very important European objectives for our country: 1) the spectacular cleaning of a corrupt political environment, through internal instruments, the political color of which is ignored, and 2) to promote the orange wave - presumably more democratic than any other political movement - launched successfully in Eastern Europe in 2004.

The intentions of Brussels are appraisable if we take into account the big backlogs that Romania has at the corruption chapter. Furthermore, the need for our country to respect its commitments and the need for imposing a vital predictability in analyzing the performance of other national performances are other objectives that the internal environment should satisfy.

The perception of Romanians in Europe is far from being a good one. An anti-Romanian xenophobic wave of an extreme violence is manifested in Italy. Countries like Spain or Britain hardly tolerate the insertion of Romanian migrants in their workforce. Especially when the anti-corruption fight is expected, desired, encouraged and even supported with an obvious subjectivity from the European institutions.

Yes, Europe still bets on the Romanian political right phenomenon in reducing the high-level corruption. More specifically, by supporting almost exclusively the presidential pressing to close the decision in the case of the Romanian white collars, the European Union assumes a direct involvement in choosing the internal institutional partner in the fight against corruption, ignoring the principle of subsidiarity.

When the internal recovery resources are exhausted, we could admit that the intervention of Europe in supporting one of the political camps in Bucharest is justified. But it is already too much for the indications from Brussels to prevail over the local political fight, to influence the trend and the decisions.

If this autumn doesn’t mean the end of Adrian Nastase, Miron Mitrea, and Serban Mihăilescu, the EU will probably say the anti-corruption fight is nothing in Romania. If the Parliament does not give way for the parliamentarians suspected of acts of corruption to respond in Court, the EU can say that a democratic body opposes to the application of the democratic rule of the law. And if the non-orange politicians and ministers get busted, this means that anti-corruption fight has entered into a straight line. And, as a corollary, one can see that the only clean politicians are the ones in orange.

If somehow the Romanians no longer believe in the savior of the nation and its crusade army, Europe pulls our sleeves and shows them to us. The European style.
