Lots of noise for nothing

de Gabriela Vranceanu Firea    |    19 Sep 2008   •   00:00

So much noise was created because of the payment in advance of the increased pensions, from the 1st of October, which will be actually paid on the 14th, that the mind of a citizen in a civilized country cannot resist it. With the passion and energy consumed here, we, the workers in politics and media, would have built at least one national road or even a highway.

The head of the social-democratic opposition, Mircea Geoană, risked when he stated he had “blackmailed” the liberal government for it to approve the payment in advance of the increased pensions. Those who shouted last year that there were no money for any increase in the pensions’ value, that it would have turned the national budget over, that the law allowing the increase is a lie, a public trick designed to attract the sympathy of the retired electorate, have started again an attack, but the speech was different. It's good that they have found money for the retired people, it is bad that the teachers didn’t benefit from the same things. The democrat-liberals talk about 350 thousand teachers who had been left on the outside, because the government and the opposition have thought only about the old people.

The problem seems to be very important for the politicians. It seems to be some sort of a social reward. In other words, the teachers should go in the streets and attack the pensioners, because they aren’t so important until the next elections. From the beginning, they thought that it is normal to oppose engineers to doctors, children to breastfeeding mothers, military to research, in our case teachers to retired people, and this gets the public speech so low that I wonder what’s next?

What could our politicians do to amaze us again? What could they invent to turn the democratic debate of ideas in a ghetto, the contradiction of political philosophies in stadium yelling, the establishment of a political consensus on certain issues into something useful for the people?

Instead of the guns and swords used by the outlaws, our politicians attack with lies, omissions in the best case, changes of mind, subversive actions, alliances they use, even if it “humiliates” them, exchanges they agree with even if it embarrasses them. Just that, in our country, politics has stopped being normal a long time ago. There is an example. How can a President of a poor country in transition, refuse the increase in the pensions’ value and be extremely cautious with the national budget, only because the government party is different from the one from which he is coming? And there is support in the Parliament for this project from the PSD and the PC, parties for which the President used all the possible offences in his basic vocabulary, in order to manage to discredit them forever. Suffering from selective amnesia, the politicians forget that the functions are transient, that their declarations are registered and we can call them at any time. Those who are usually quiet usually do more than the legend says.
