SDP: Mitrea Refers to Alleged Alliances - Target: NIP and CP

Geoana will not be the SDP (the Social Democratic Party) candidate for Cotroceni. NIP (the National Initiative Party) could be invited to take part in a before-the-elections alliance, and CP (the Conservatory Party), NLP (the National Liberal Party), DP (the Democratic Party) and DUHR (the Democratic Union of the Hungarians in Romania) could be Government partners. All these SDP scenarios have been mentioned by Secretary General Miron Mitrea.

Yesterday, in an interview for the NewsIn agency, the SDP Secretary General, Miron Mitrea, stated that Ion Iliescu should have a much more important role in SDP and, in order to support this theory, he launched the theory of several alliances. "We have to think of a system of alliances for the case of before-term elections, and this system has to surround SDP and to have the full support from Ion Iliescu", Mitrea says. He believes that the Social Pole, started by the Iliescu-Roman tandem, was not such a good idea, but he has another idea for this ("a political construction" with the cooptation of unions and parties). "For example, I am thinking about NIP. I know there will be a lot of people that will wonder a lot, but this is an active party that will certainly have to enter an alliance in order to take part in the Parliament", Mitrea says.

OPTIONS

As for the possible after-the-elections alliances, Mitrea does not exclude the collaboration with DUHR, even though "it might be a good idea for them to step aside for a while". "I don’t think there are any irreconcilable relations between the two parties (SDP and CP), even though there are a lot of controversies about this in SDP", Mitrea says, also taking into account alliances with NLP or DP. "I am convinced that there will be solutions regarding NLP, if it will be necessary. DP is a possibility as well, even though the relations between the two parties haven’t been and still aren’t of the best", Mitrea states. Asked whether SDP still takes into account a before-the-elections alliance with CP, Mitrea answered he would still consider it. However, the members of the party did not discuss about this and it is very possible for them to totally reject it.

NOT GEOANA

On the other hand, Miron Mitrea admits that SDP does not have a current candidate for the presidential elections, adding that Geoana "is rather thinking of the Prime Minister role".

However, he is convinced that there are people in SDP to be serious candidates for Cotroceni, and he named Ilie Sarbu, Ioan Rus, Sorin Oprescu and Serban Nicolae. Mitrea says the decision for the SDP presidential candidate will only be taken after the Parliamentary elections.

NASTASE AND DIP IN DANGER

Asked whether the people that have current problems with the law, like Adrian Nastase and Dan Ioan Popescu, will be on the lists of the future elections, Mitrea said this depended on the organizations they took part in. "If they don’t find other organizations to take them over, they will certainly have problems. If the organization does not want to put them on the lists, they have to find other organizations, or to mind their own business. If Vrancea does not want me on the lists anymore, I retire", Mitrea showed. On the other hand, the SDP leader accused that "the Romanian justice is used as a political weapon", but he admitted this was happening during the SDP Government as well. "Justice has been used as a political weapon ever since. Therefore it was also used like this between 2001 and 2004", Mitrea concluded.
