SDP (the Social Democratic Party) intends to conclude pre- and post- electoral alliances because it is convinced that it won’t be able to obtain, all by itself, the necessary majority to govern after the autumn elections.

"SDP will have to try to create some agreements before or after the elections. The results of the local elections proved that the alliances are a viable solution", said yesterday the governing party’s president, Adrian Nastase. The statement has been made in front of the members of the Central Executive Bureau. "At the local elections, our party obtained the lead of 19 county councils, which means about a half. In the places where this kind of agreements hasn’t appeared the results weren’t so good. This is why the alliance strategy is to be an important part of the party’s maneuver, such that SDP will be sure about forming the future Government, because all by itself it won’t be able to obtain the necessary majority", said Nastase. His opinion is that an alliance strategy is necessary in the second round of the presidential elections as well, when it "will be a powerful polarization between the first two candidates". He has emphasized that concluding some pre-electoral alliances will affect the parliamentary lists.

OPTIONS. The SDP leader showed that there are 4 parties sure of their entrance in the Parliament and this fact is quite enough for the appearance of some alliances. Nastase excepted a pre-electoral alliance with NLP (the National Liberal Party), DP (The Democratic Party) and GRP (the Great Romania Party).

Concerning a post-electoral alliance with GRP, the SDP leader said that this problem is out of the question for the time being.

LISTS. The Central Executive Bureau of SDP agreed on organizing internal elections for the nomination of the party’s candidates for the Parliament. At most 10% of the eligible places for each chamber are to be set at central level. The internal elections are to happen on the 5th of September. The SDP leader, Adrian Nastase, said that the President Ion Iliescu is waited to candidate from the SDP lists at the parliamentary elections. On the other hand, Nastase proposed creating a Moral Integrity Council, which is to examine some of the candidatures on the SDP parliamentary lists.

PONTA LOP-EARED BY NASTASE

Adrian Nastase emphasized the fact that the members of the party should comment inside it and not in the press. He was talking about the SDY (the Social Democratic Youth) president’s, Victor Ponta, statement concerning the refusal of the young members to candidate in the preliminary elections. "We should be extremely balanced when we talk about the messages, the options, the decisions and the commentaries", said Nastase. He also said that some of Victor Ponta’s commentaries have created "certain complaints and they are justified", but he has to believe in the party’s idea of having young members on the lists.
