Torna, torna, Frattini or the Democracy Teacher

Not long ago, an American man said that a politician must always have three hats close. One that he should discard in a battle in a ring, another one to speak, and a third one to get bunnies out of it, if he gets elected. I do not know how many hats Mr. Franco Frattini has, but he certainly managed to a find the third one.

Do you still remember? Before becoming what he is now, namely the Italian Minister of External Affairs, Mr Frattini was the European commissioner responsible for Justice on the continent. He looked like a statue of justice, inflexible and ready to fight against any irregularity in a country like, for example, ours. He turned Macovei and Basescu into the two scales of the Balance that the blind folded lady is holding in her hand. For months in a row, we watched and judged our Justice through the eyes of Frattini.

When he became a member of the government in Rome, he didn’t lose any time. First, his government has promoted a law that postponed all the lawsuits that could have disturbed his political partners. What is true in the Dacian colony is not true in the Roman metropolis as well. Here's a quick bunny from the hat, I thought. Because Mr. Frattini did not resign after this decision. On the contrary.

The second bunny appeared right after that. Mr Frattini’s government started to build a database with the fingerprints of Romanian citizens who have never done anything bad. It's a unique gesture in Europe. Europe didn’t hesitate to react either. In the parliament in Brussels, the socialists, the liberals and the ecologists adopted a resolution which clearly condemns this Orwelian initiative. The populars didn’t. Because the Executive in Rome is now part of this political family. It may seem natural in this area governed by necessary compromises. With one exception.

Even the fresh Romanian populars, namely the PD-L, are quiet, even though we're talking about an offense against the citizens of their country. Although the party is led in the shadow by the head of state, especially in the external affairs, national security and safety of citizens matters.

In the eternal thirst for votes and populist movements, PD-L would not have normally passed on such an opportunity. But there is a more important element here. The political exchange and the hands that wash one another.

Approximately three years ago, Frattini and his colleagues looked the other way when it came to the thinness of the so-called fight against corruption in Bucharest. They transformed Macovei and Basescu into heroes in front of the press, although the files of the big fight became emptier by the day.

The time has finally come for Basescu, Macovei and PD-L to pay their dues. And they surely do it. They are quiet, while all the responsible political forces in Europe are joining the citizens the votes of which they want. Have you somehow learned the opinions of Basescu, Boc or Macovei about the fingerprinting actions in Italy? I do not think one should know one too soon. They are forced to shut up since they cannot support this. Otherwise, Frattini could get upset and tell the truth about the fight against corruption in Bucharest.
